Rock Cut SP, Loves Park Illinois '07 Aug 28-Sep 4
1st (Saturday):   We attended the Riverfront Festival in Rockford to day. There are open stages with music, and food vendors. We listened to one of two orchestras in the US who play 1920's music. It was great. I've heard recorded Flapper music, but this was live and sounds so much better.

28th:   Nice isolated site. Some of us have chosen the sites with trees and bushes forming 3 walls around us. This one, number 417, has a defective 30 Amp circuit breaker. I will contact the host this morning for repairs. Will visit Pall and Mary, and be given a tour by Paul, of Chicago, just an hour and a half away. -r<

Well, we finally arrived in Loves Park, IL, next door to Rockford, where Paul and Mary are. We're in Rock Cut State Park, beautiful park in the middle of suburbia. We're in a gorgeous site, very private, surrounded by green, green, green, and more green. Total privacy. Only problem, the electric hookup in this site isn't working right. Richard forced it to accept 20 A, we really need 30 Amps for A/C. So, we're getting along without A/C for tonight but definitely need it. [50 Amp service was restored when the ants were removed from inside the electrical box.] It's so humid, not terribly hot, but the A/C would dry out the air. We'll make do for tonight, straighten things out in the morning when it's still cool and we aren't so weary.
It's been a long, long day. Left Decorah about 9:15. Our GPS keeps telling us to go the wrong way so ended up driving several miles out of the way by the end of the day. I finally asked Richard to please ignore it, let me be the final "say".
Stopped in Darlington, WI where my GGGGrandparents Thompson died, they are buried in a little cemetery near Wiota, but we couldn't find their graves, even though they are listed as being there. I did find some good land records and a marriage record in Darlington, the county seat. Such pretty county, Iowa can't claim it all! Wisconsin has it's share as well. -k

Pulpit Rock City Cg, Decorah Iowa '07 Aug 26-28
We just arrived in Decorah, IA. Got the last RV site with electricity. Beautiful campground, all spaced out, 204 miles to go to get to Rockford. We're thinking we'll spend 2 nights here so we can enjoy Decorah. It's supposed to be an interesting town, very Norwegian. And since the campground is so nice, why not. Then do the last leg in one day which will put us there on Tuesday.
Saw a lot of overflowing rivers today, some flooded fields, but no disasters that we could tell. So far, so good. Heard from Paul, things are beginning to dry out a bit, or rather, the water is lower. Another brief storm is to roll thru on Wednesday, then turn nice again, hopefully.
                                                  [pix]
Here is a photo or two of what IA does offer in the way of an "ocean". These were taken at Spirit Lake State Park. Beautiful day, as you can see. Beautiful today as well. The blue of lakes and rivers just glowed! Made for a very pretty drive. We've managed to stay off the interstate so we're seeing more scenery that way. Talk about corn fields. Looks like enough to feed the world! And soybeans. Sorry, once an Iowan, always an Iowan. It's just so darned pretty here. But not in the winter!

Hi and Dry Cg, Chamberlain South Dakota '07 Aug 15-17
Arrow Cg, Wall South Dakota '07 Aug 14-15
Visited Wall Drug. Didn't get free ice water; did buy lunch. BBQ ground beef sandwich was bad. The sauce didn't have any molasses or brown sugar or tomato paste or onion or garlic. It wasn't BBQ sauce! Well, the rest of the arcade or mini theme park was interesting with shop after shop. We met a couple of the employees who were two of the 13 couples that come to Wall in their RVs every Summer for their jobs. They generally winter in Texas or Arizona. Nice life.
Hi and Dry Cg, Chamberlain South Dakota '07 Aug 15-17
Kay want's to visit a grave here. Weather has been very warm, but not a lot of the 100+ ºF temperatures.

Geographic Center of the US is just 20 miles north of town -- if you include Alaska and Hawaii.

Hardin Montana '07 Aug 10-12
This is Little Big Horn Battelfield country. The hills are not to high, and they are grass covered. There are no trees for Custer or Sitting Bull to hide behind. The details of the battle, as well as can be known since 249 of the 869 sodiers were killed, are sign boarded along a paved road. (10% were German born, and 41% were foreign born.)

2007 Aug  5, Sunday:

2007 Aug  4, Saturday:

2007 Aug  3, Friday: Started out with rain in the night. Sun came out at noon. Spending our time on computers. Then read and napped by the Gallatin River.

2007 Aug  2, Thursday: Stayed at home. Well, we did break camp to move from campsite 60 to campsite 17. The advantage is electricity, for more money. Richard got output of Inverter connected to breaker panel.

2007 Aug  1, Wednesday:Visited Yellowstone. Kay and W took lots of pictures, walked a couple of miles, and got sun burned! We have about 300 pictures. Hopefully some will be trashed. Richard got the Inverter hung and the 12 volt DC supply connected.

2007 Jul 30, Tuesday: This campground is next to the highway -- where else. Of course, it has to be because of the narrow canyon for the Gallatin River which comes from West Yellowstone, 50 miles to the South.

We do miss the access to a sewer. It will be a 50 mile drive to the nearest dump station! We will try to hold it until we get to Bozeman on our way back to the North Entrance to Yellowstone NP.

Big Sky Camp & RV Park Montana '07 July 26-27
We drove about 140 miles today. We have stopped in the small town of Miles City. Again we are staying connected -- truck to trailer. Leveling is tricky, because we have to use blocks to raise right and left wheels together if we want to change the front-back level.

Medora City Campground, Medora North Dakota '07 July 25-26

This is the entrance to the Southern Unit of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. We were impressed enough by the Visitors Station fromND07_Roosevelt_NP_02 (Custom).JPG (2478 bytes) which we got a view of the Painted Canyon in the Park, that we didn't bother to enter and take the driving loop. And, too, we didn't want to disconnect because we are keeping on the move to meet W in Montana in 5 days. The Medora Campground was $30, which is high. It does give access to the Little Missouri River for swimming and fishing. We did neither, but stayed inside with the air conditioning. We have been having temperatures around 100o.

Memorial Park, Glen Ullin North Dakota '07 July 24-25
We drove less than 200 miles today. We went thru Bismarck, North Dakota to get a picture of the capitol. It doesn't have a dome! We also shipped by UPS the extra Internet satellite dish on to someone who might be able to use it.

Lake Hiddenwood SP, Selby

'07 July 23-24

The Ranger says it fills up on weekends. It is a reservoir with about a dozen sites, only 7 with electricity. The others are dry. Beautiful woods with birds, trees, berries, and rabbits. Just two rigs stayed overnight.

Called a "Public Corps" park. It was built by the US Army Corps of Engineers and turned over (sold?) to the State of South Dakota for maintenance and operation. It gives the State a very good park!

It could be called "blacktop camping." We were on gravel, but across the road is a golf course. We were backed up to a levy on the James River, with trailers parked parallel on both sides of us.

Sioux Empire Fairgrounds, Sioux Falls

South Dakota

'07 June 8-July 19

2007 July 18: Had a lovely dinner at Foley's for Kay's birthday celebration. Excellent food and wine. No dessert.

2007 July 17: We have extended our stay another 2 days. Moving into the Hitch Hiker has been a slow, but steady, process. The ground around our house show piles of stuff. The piles have been shrinking daily. I am eliminating the exhaust fan from the pile by installing it over our bed. The second StarBand dish will be boxed tomorrow, and I hope to install the solar electric panels then, too. That will leave pieces of wood I have been saving for remodeling projects. I should not need any, now, with this RV. It has so much that is easy to live with. There are several plastic storage boxes in our piles that may just go to the dump. "We like our new house," has become our happy mantra.

I have come up with one for myself, "I hate cold!" Now you may wonder what I think of heat: I stay inside with the air refrigeration, and enjoy the mornings and evenings outdoors.

We will be meeting Warren in a few days for a visit in eastern Montana.

   -SD07 Kays July Haircut (2).JPG (1697 bytes)
I cut Kay's hair a few days ago. It didn't get combed before taking these pictures. -SD07 Kays July Haircut (Custom) (5).jpg (858 bytes)

2007 July 14: The Wilderness trailer is now officially for sale. It has been put onto the consignment lot at 12th Street Auto Mart in Sioux Falls, SD. On the Web site, click on "motorhomes" and check out the trailers. Let me know if you found the trailer here on my Web site, and want more information.

Our "new" home on wheels is actually a year older model. It's a 2003 Nu-Wa Hitch hiker 335 BWTG -- 33.5 foot long cabin, bay window at the back, and triple glides. We have our two computer desk in the bay window, and two of the glides are opposing which makes a nice large Living Room. The bedroom has a deeper closet and a roomier bath. We are enjoying a lot of features that I had to add onto the Wilderness. The floor is insulated, the kitchen counter is larger, and the general condition is much better -- it hasn't been lived in for 3 years! And, we expect this one will not show the wear as badly. It is built so much better from the start -- the latches latch; the hinges swing; the shelves stay in the cupboard.

2007 June 25: We've done it! We told the dealer we would buy the 2003 Discover America by NuWa, model 33.5 BWTS.``

2007 Jun 24: Kay is home from Avera McKennan Hospital. She has had IV antibiotics and is to continue for several days with visits for additional doses. She is doing better -- less coughing and able to breathe deeper. SD07-Avera McKennan Hosp 2.JPG (3279 bytes)

We've paid for parking at the Sioux Empire Fairgrounds till July 8. We can use the time to sort thru our boxes of Stuff in an effort to lighten our load. We are carrying a lot of unnecessary weight. Of course, this isn't the first time we have set up the goal of thinning out our Stuff. One of the incentives is our considering another RV. If we prepare  ours to show and sell, we may find we like it better.

June 18, 2007: Kay went in for outpatient bronchoscopy this afternoon. Weather has been milder -- less wind, not as hot, some sun time through the clouds. Last nights rain caught us with our windows open. We had wet papers and desk this morning.

June 16, 2007: Sioux Falls sponsors a Cultural Fair each Spring. This is our first. There was a fair crowd, and many vendor booths. About half were service organizations offering promotional information -- foreign exchange student, battered women, Irish Club, handicapped advocacy, and so forth.
SD07 Cultural Fair (8) (Custom).JPG (14684 bytes)  SD07 Cultural Fair (2) (Custom).JPG (12468 bytes)

June 15, 2007: The Rally ended yesterday. We were so busy, especially when we added on our RV shopping and doctor visits. We might like another fifth wheel trailer with one more slide-out room and a couple of feet longer. But the weight cannot exceed 14,800 pounds.

SD07 EROS, Sioux Falls (4) (Medium) (Custom).JPG (11942 bytes) June 13, 2007: Richard went with the group to tour EROS (?=Earth Research from Orbiting Satellite). This picture is of one of the old computers used to process the raw downloaded data from the orbiting sensors. The sensors are not all "cameras". The guide discussed how many algorithms are applied to see clouds or remove clouds, see vegetation or see water, see minerals or see man-made structures. A lot of philosophy goes into it, as Richard sees it. The data can be processed for whatever it is that you want to see.

We have purchased a GPS that mounts on the dashboard to help us find our way. It can pay for itself if we avoid missing a turn where we would have to travel another 20 miles for a turn around with the 32 foot trailer.

June 09, 2007: Today was our 45th wedding anniversary. We had a quiet day at home and a lovely dinner out. Pasta dishes for both of us. Richard had shrimp. We shared a "To Die For Chocolate Cake" for dessert.

SD07 Cultural Fair (5) (Custom).JPG (14048 bytes) "The Farmer" looking at the Falls in Falls Park.

June 08, 2007:  We are now in Sioux Falls. It was about a half hour's drive from our park in Tea, so hardly not what you'd call a long trip. And best of all, no strong winds to contend with. A beautiful day, actually. Sunny and lovely. Good day all around. Once we got all set up we went to Alternative Resources (our forwarding service) and picked up our mail, then went to our financial guy who's office happens to be next door and went over our investments, then to lunch at a shopping mall, then did a bit of shopping. Checked out Lens Crafters where I got my sunglasses (last winter in Tucson) and it turns out the reason they haven't worked well is apparently they got sat on or something of that sort. Also, when they have you look thru the gadget at the optician, well, apparently something didn't work and they didn't get my progressive lenses lined up right. Soooo, I now have new lenses for no charge in my sunglasses. And, it seems the same thing happened to my regular glasses, not sat on, just not lined up right, so one of those lenses has to be remade. Unfortunately Lens Crafters hadn't made those, got those from Costco, and since we are no longer Costco members, we had to pay to get that lens remade. I'll have it by the time we leave Sioux Falls.

Cottonwood CG, Army CoE, Yankton

South Dakota

'07 June 3-6

SD07-Cottonwood-CG.jpg (2339 bytes) This is a beautiful park.  The lawns are kept mowed, even if it is our nap time. The Army Corps of Engineers has very nice and clean facilities.   We miss the water and sewer hookups, but we have our own fresh water and waste water tanks, so can enjoy this park and others.  The electric power that is provided is very useful for our computers (Internet) and the television.

If you want to find this park on the Web, you need to ask for a Nebraska campground. We are on the Missouri River, between SD and NE. Really on the river. We are on the fill on the downstream side of a dam.

Next week is an Alternative Resources Camping Rally.  AR is our mail forwarding service, and they assist in our vehicle licensing, voter registration and so forth for us residents. At the Rally we will share food and hear from RV servicemen, an attorney, and post office representative.

Tuesday, June 05, 2007

There's a beautiful little yellow finch out her flitting around a tree. He just glows in the sunlight. A very pretty day - perfect. Must get out for a walk! Had to stop writing as all of a sudden my computer wouldn't type anything. Weird. So, had my lunch, met the new neighbors, put a stew in the crockpot for tonight, now it's working again. Go figure. I was ready to stop typing anywhere.

Monday, June 04, 2007 We are now in Yankton, SD, arrived here yesterday. Pretty spot. near where we camped with Paul and Mary last fall. Same sort of layout, just operated by Corps of Engineers. Costs about 1/2 the price as the other state campground with the Golden Age Pass, so obviously we chose this one. It's below one of the dams on the Missouri River, there's quite a series of them. Also along the Lewis and Clark route so lots of info around about that. Lots of green lawns, trees. Actually, even though it's just below the dam (which we hope doesn't break while we're here), it's situated by a good sized lake. Weird layout, but beautiful. Had planned on being here for several days but can only stay 3 as all the sites are reserved come the week-end. We'd forgotten we're now in the summer season so we don't have the options we do the rest of the year. Schools all close by late May in the Midwest, it seems.

We'll go on to Sioux Falls, probably. I guess we're going to an RVers rally in Sioux Falls put on by Alternative Resources, from the 11th to the 13th. We'd heard about it but kind of dismissed it, but then realized we really needed to take care of our living trusts, South Dakota style, so needed to come this way. Get all that settled once and for all. Timed it right to be here for the rally. Here's what is going on at the rally, if you're interested. This is the info sent to me...

"Registration starts at noon on June 11. First meal at 6 pm. Breakfast is at 8 A.M. each morning. On the 12 we have speakers on insurance, lady from the post office, from a bank and an attorney. In the afternoon there is a tour to the EROS Data Center. Most popular tour we have. Picnic at Falls Park Tuesday night. Wednesday the 13 we have RV and tow vehicles on display and at noon a tour and lunch at our heart hospital. Snack and seminar in pm. Pot luck and a movie in the evening. Thursday, after breakfast a service manager from a local RV dealer with talk, 3 optional tours also and dinner that night with games and social time. There is still time to sign up you just wont get a t shirt. Too late to order."

Sitting here with some nice music. In the background is lots of birdsong. Definitely a happy bunch of feathered friends. Lots of trees to nest in?

Oldham Lake (?) Park, Monona County

Iowa

'07 May 29-June 2

mini-q-IA07 Oldham Lake Co Park 4.JPG (4319 bytes) Lake or Pond?

The surface area is about 10 acres, but we were told by Iowa State University students that a body of water must be able to erode its shore when the wind blows to be called a Lake. Now, this pond is popular with fishermen (and one 4 year old fisherwoman), so the County of Monona has called it Oldham Lake Recreation Area. Boat speed is limited to "No Wake." How a boat would have the space to accelerate to wake speed is difficult to appreciate.

We have been the sole inhabitants for four days and our variety of experiences have all been good. We have experienced weather from warm sun to heavy rain and wind. We have visited the sought after grave of Kay's great-grandfather, Thomas Loyd. We have eaten at local restaurants that serve a hamburger dressed with onion and pickles. Tomato and lettuce are provided only on request.

Our GMC one ton pickup truck continues to amaze us. We get better than 12 mpg when cruising around the county, with fuel that costs 50 cents less per gallon than gas.

Thomas & Zelinda (Selinda) Loyd owned these 80 acres 1884-1896.

Shenandoah, Sidney, and Shower

Iowa

'07 May 25-28

The Wedding Shower was in Shenandoah for Kay's second cousin. It was a cloudy day, but they (the ladies and the groom who was coerced into attending the party) were able to take pictures out on the deck at the bride's uncle's house, on the top of a hill overlooking the many acres of lake that ought to be corn fields. The flooding has been terrible this year.

Dan-Jenni.jpg (1963 bytes)

Sidney is important; it's Kay birthplace. Here is Penn Drug where we got a cheese sandwich in 1998 for 37 cents. It has to be the best buy in town. Of course it was two slices of balloon bread with one slice of American cheese, but it included the tomato slice on request.

Madison County is the filming site of "The Bridges of Madison County" -- a very nice Clint Eastwood movie. Pictured above are Main Street, and John Wayne's Birthplace, all in Winterset.

The fourth picture is of Main Street in the town of Pella -- a Dutch town complete with a windmill. It is very clean and well painted, making it a very attractive tourist destination. They have a Tulip Festival, of course, a pastry you will not forget.
